Whiskey bottles have a long, long history. The oldest bottle known to exist is the Glenavon Special Liqueur Whiskey bottle which was made in the 1850's and retails today for ~$29,000. This old bottle has the exact same bottle design as Jameson's Irish Whiskey bottle, which features a few updates on the label.
Newer bottles are sturdier and better at keeping its contents from going stale for longer.
